I told you guys this Facebook thing isn't all it's cracked up to be. Please read the article, post a comment and be ready for a quick discussion (not like today's) on Friday. This is for a grade so read and post.
I completely agree with this article. I sometimes just use the tabs at the top of my internet page and have Facebook there even if I'm not using it. This makes me appear to be online even if I am just doing homework on another tab, so it makes people Facebook chat me while I am trying to do work. Which totally gets me distracted and off topic and probably does have negative consequences on my grades.
Haha as we speak I'm doing AP Biology Homework, reading a bit of Frank, and skyping. Facebook is also open on my browser.
I guess thats a bit of a shocker! But multi tasking has got to end up leading to errors. You can't master that many things at once.
But I know for myself that there is almost less temptation and distraction when facebook is open, because Ill know if i have an update instead of wondering if i do.... not that I actually care that much.
And I hope by multitasking I can still make an A in Bio!
I agree,I also usually have chat boxes, music, ect. up while I do homework. It leads to mistakes that could have been avoided by a little more attention put on the assignment and not on the other sites that are up. Having too many distractions makes a simple task take a lot longer than needed.
I almost always have another tab opened for facebook when I do my homework which is extremely distracting. I keep it up just in case I get bored doing homework and use it as a little "break". It's extremely distracting in the sense that I find myself constantly re-reading a question or something else I'm trying to do. So i do agree with the article but, on the other hand, I don't feel like it has a HUGE impact on my academic performance.
Allow me to show you a "Facebook Page" that sums all of this up: 'study..study ... stud .... sta..ah ..... staf .... stafay ... fay ... face ..facebook :D'
To be honest, I hide many of my friends from my news feed. I haven't bothered to check, but some of you reading this right now are probably hidden from my news feed. Not because I don't like you, but because, frankly, I'm generally uninterested in what you have to say. The people that do show up in my news feed, however, usually post funny or informative links. Their updates are often witty and deserving of a "like."
But I digress. Yes, Facebook is distracting. And no, I'm not surprised that it leads to lower grades. I've tried keeping it closed while I work (along with other websites such as Digg and Google Reader), but that doesn't work, especially when it's only a click away (I've got 'em all on my bookmarks bar). So I created a restricted account on my computer that denies access to various websites and limits me to only a few applications (all of which are for academic purposes sans a music app or two such as iTunes). It's too much of a hassle to switch back to my main account, so it deters me from getting distracted. Problem solved.
I completley agree that Facebook is huge distraction. If I am doing homework on the computer I almost alyways have Facebookk up too, and I am constantly checking it. I don't know that it makes me get a bad grade on the assignment, but it does make it take longer to complete.
I am currently on facebook haha, it is a total distraction though I agree. I like to see whats going on, but I am sure an hour of waiting is worth getting an A over a B
I agree with everyone else, but I dont get on the computer when doing homework because my mom wants me to focus on homework. But I usually get distracted from other things while on facebook.
unfortuantly yee this is truee. ill be chilln on facebook doin my homework when ill get the pop noise from someone iming me and will completely get unfocused, not that its hard for me to. sO POSsibly if i paid more attention to my studys then f book or attempting both at the same time then my grades would be better and i'd be smarter.
I completely agree that facebook is a huge distraction to students while they are attempting to do homework. I often have this problem myself however i don't think my grades are effected that drastically. But i should probably avoid facebook while doing my homework.
i agree with this article. there have been many incidents where i have had a paper due the next day but spent valuable time procrastinating on facebook, therefore i didnt get the best grade on my paper. if multitasking wasnt such a distraction with school work then anybody would be able to manage there school life and social life at the same time
mhmmm i guess you and i mr. moon, are going to be 20 grade points smarter than everyone else in the world. woop woop. i think this is yet another prime example of how facebook is a load of crap and a waste. how can anyone be "studying" and on facebook at the same time. i dont think you would be doing too much studying which is why this article is a very good example, 20 grade points because you would rather be on your facebook for 2 hours than studying to pass a test? thats pathetic.
Hey mr. Moon its Brian. I can't figure out my password so I'm using ramones . But I think facebook should be done away with cause it always delays my homework time. Therefore I usually don't even start till like 10 and never get any sleep It's up right now. Haha
Facebook can sometimes be helpful to us but most of the time it's just to past the time. Time that could be spent on doing homework and studying. So I think that maybe facebook should be done away with for a while to see if the frequent users that have lower gpa's will begin to show an increase in their school effort.

ReplyDeleteAll of this is true. When facebook is open im almost certain not to do my work because im focused on everyone else not what i should be focused on.
